Populations Models and Exponential Growth

This interdisciplinary learning expedition has been designed to develop students' conceptual understanding of the properties of exponents and by using population models, the students will develop a conceptual understanding underlying the fundamental principles of exponential functions. The students participating in this learning exploration will participate in a laboratory investigation as they cultivate and document the growth of a population of bread fungi. They will discover how exponential functions are used to make interpretations and predictions of their scientific data. Overall, the purpose of this learning expedition is to provide students with the opportunities to experience science as a "process" and to use the discipline of mathematics as a "tool" for interpretation and analysis.
